Gothic Revival

The Gothic revival adapted thearchitectural elements of medieval architecture to furniture and decorative arts as evidenced in the use of the cinquefoil, asymmetrical five-lobed formalised leafform, the crocket, carved flowers and foliage placed on outer edges of a vertical element, and the quatre-foil, a four-lobed leaf form used in Gothic tracery, pointedarch, theroseand linen-fold. Gothic furniture had local particularities, one being the wood used in its construction. In England, Germany and the Low countries, it was mainly oak, in France, chestnut andin Italy and Spain walnut.

Folk Art

Folk Art draws from many cultures and is conditioned by both the material to which it is applied andby the aesthetic preferences of the ornamentor. Decoration may have symbolic significance or a magical or spiritual function. Surface embellishment is divided into numerous small, visually seperate units of decoration with a vocabulary of stylised plant forms such as sunflowers or tulips emanating from vessels, contrasting rows of rosettes alternating with lozenges. Central motifs of a tree of life with curved branches displaying blossom, tulips, leaf motifs, pinwheels, hearts, paired birds, lilies and stars also figure.
