A 1914, Steinway model O grand piano for sale with a mahogany and ebony case. Cabinet features inlaid mahogany that from different angles creates an optical illusion.
Trompe-l'oeil is a french term that describes an art technique that creates a visual optical illusion.
The mahogany inlay is in interlacing circles and squares. The mahogany wood grain is laid out in a perpendicular design. As the light catches the wood grain a circle or square is emphasised. At the centre of each circle is an accent in mother of pearl. The theme of interlocking circles and squares is repeated in the cut-out music desk design. This Steinway model O grand piano has gate legs with three central spines. The legs are attached to an ebony stretcher that follows the sinuous line of the piano case. The original sketches for this piano design still exist today and can be viewed below.
