Government restrictions on metals initially prevented Steinway from building pianos during the war. At this time Steinway shifted production to coffins and transport gliders. In 1941, Steinway secured the contract to build a new design of piano, The Victory Vertical. Over 3000 were made and airdropped to troops in the field.
