The post-war boom brought massive changes in the home; it was out with the old and in with the new. The American diner look with bubblegum or primary colours, neon and kitsch became a design classic. New materials were introduced including PVC, Formica, fibreglass, rubber, melamine, aluminium, vinyl, plastics. Abstract and geometric patterns were popular. Scientific research and the space race also informed design. Source bbc.co.uk
